SIOBHAN LATIMER Set Designer
Q. Describe the role you play in the production of The Gold Fish Bowl.
I am the set designer for the production. My hopes are to create a set that feels like it has been in existence long before the story takes place and will continue to exist long after. I also hope that the sets are successful in establishing a naturally matched environment to compliment the characters and moods of the story, therefore making them almost unnoticeable. I am also playing Hart Kane’s sister.
Q. What are your special talents, passions you bring to your work on the movie?
I have very eclectic passions and talents all of which seem to merge together in the film medium. I am currently studying interior design at Fanshawe College, and I have also studied fine art, dance and film. Whenever possible I take opportunities to act in local films and take part in the arts community.
Q. Should viewers feel sorry for Mara Winter? Why? Why not?
Mara’s less than perfect upbringing definitely warrants feelings of compassion from audiences, but I do not feel as though viewers need to feel sorry for her. Mara carries on with her struggles in her own way while maintaining certain strength. Though somewhat lost at the beginning, Mara has the tools to take hold of her situation and thrive though her creative intelligence and independent nature.
Q. Derrick Winter is a complex professional, husband, and father. What drives his complexities?
Derek is a creative, emotional and passionate character, and I believe all of these factors can build up for him to a point where he becomes overwhelmed. Imbalances of any kind can make certain tasks feel unattainable, and either because of his life choices or his natural qualities, dealing with more than himself can become overwhelming.
Q. Choose a role from any film and tell why you would have liked to play it.
I must admit, as passionate as I am about film I tend to read a lot more and could give a list of many books I would without a doubt play a character in. As far as film goes I would have absolutely loved to play Ava in Ex Machina. It is such a unique and mysterious role. I loved the calmness and power her character had.
Q. How is humour injected into The Gold Fish Bowl, layered with shades of family trauma?
Though subtle, Lennon and his lovability and innocence give a light dose of humour to the film.
Q. What professional actor do you think upstages most others? Why?
I am a huge fan of Gary Oldman. He is so diverse, cool and carried himself well. Sharlto Copley has stuck out to me recently as well, as he really goes for it when playing characters and I admire that. I see great things in Brie Larson too!
Q. Your fav sf flick, fantasy flick, animated, romance………?
I am a huge sci-fi fan and I really enjoy watching the genre a lot for the world building and possibilities. That being said, one film that has really stuck with me for a long time is Phoebe in Wonderland.
Q. If you could make a documentary, what subject would you choose and why?
It would definitely be related to science and space exploration. I love learning about strange and amazing anomalies that are hard to wrap your head around.
Q. Favourite directors, favourite scores, soundtracks?
Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan, and J.J. Abrams always seem to create films that are entertaining, fun and meaningful.
