Tanisha Cunningham is a 21 year old Sheridan student who is passionate about the theatre and film industry. Currently she is playing the lead role of Mara Winter in and upcoming screenplay titles The Goldfish Bowl and she was the lighting operator and sound operator for Sheridan colleges Performing Arts Program student productions at Erindale Theatre. She just finished co-writing and directing her first short film titled All Access Pass and she was the lighting director for SODA POP Theatres production of Georgia. She has studied Technical Production at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario and Performing Arts Preparation at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario with aspiring plans to become an actress on stage and/or in film and to have my own screenplays and scripts be published one day.
I play the role of Mara Winter. She is a scared but fierce woman who desperately wants to take her life back and use her seventeen seconds of craziness to do it. By overcoming her past, her fears, and herself Mara gains the confidence to live the life she wants and be at peace with it.
I hope my character connects with viewers in a way that enlightens them on mental health issues and shows them it is part of daily life for most people. It is not something you can get away from, more people are struggling than you think, and it takes hep and courage to overcome it.
My character perceives the Winter family as broken. Many times there are hints of the belief of hope for salvation in the future but they are quickly dashed away with more anger and disappear. Towards the end my character views her family as salvageable and decides the best way to do that is by splitting up with her husband.
I don’t think viewers should feel sorry for Mara particularly. I feel like they should understand and appreciate her struggle and root for her like the underdog she is. She deserves some sympathy yes for the sad moments in her life but not pity please.
I think what drives Derek Winter’s complexities is his want to be a good father, husband, and person and his fear of medication which will regulate him. He knows his medication will give him the regulation that he wants but he fears it will compromise his creativity and hinders him as a person. I think he smokes to escape it all and has issues owning up and taking responsibility which also drives his complexities.
The biggest challenge playing this role for me is making sure I grasp the whole character and can delve myself into her. I need to really find her in me and bring it out. This is my first major role so I want to make sure I can do a good portrayal of Mara’s layers and her complexities.
There is some underlying humor to The Goldfish Bowl’s traumatic family layers. When Mara and Lennon poke fun at Derek, when Hart pokes fun at Derek and when Nina pokes fun at Derek. They not even jokes really just subtle comments that viewers can possibly relate to which makes it funny.
If I could reshoot a scene for any movie it would be in the end of The Shinning – well, I would reshoot the whole film but that is another story. I would do it exactly like the book describes. Explosion and all.
